Raffinerie Heide is Germany's northernmost crude oil processor. Here in Schleswig-Holstein, mineral oil has a long tradition. At Dithmarschen, firstly oil chalk and later on crude oil have been extracted and refined for over 150 years. On our 134-hectare Hemmingstedt site we process over four million tonnes of crude oil. An outstanding proportion of the petrol and diesel fuel consumed in Schleswig-Holstein comes from our refinery. Our aviation turbine fuel supplies almost every flight departing from Hamburg airport, while our heating oil supplies 250,000 homes between Flensburg and Hamburg with all the warmth they need. Nearly 70 per cent of the crude oil is used for the production of fuels. However, we are also a chemicals company, manufacturing some 450,000 tonnes of petrochemical products a year, turning benzene, toluene and sulphur into detergents, fertiliser, tyres and interior panelling for cars. Since 2010 we have been part of the internationally active Klesch Group, which has its headquarters in Geneva.
