Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute (ABJHI) is Canada's only independent institute for channelling knowledge into better bone and joint health care services, and the nation's leading organization for engaging stakeholders in adopting best practices. ABJHI's work involves using the latest evidence to design innovative models of care for patients, tracking and reporting on health care service performance, forecasting need and demand for services, and searching for and applying the latest evidence to improve care and increase the value for money spent on health care. We also manage and coordinate research studies. One of our greatest strengths is our ability to bring together the clinicians, managers, policymakers and researchers whose collaboration is necessary to bring about improvement and efficiency in health care service. We work closely with Alberta's Bone and Joint Health Strategic Clinical Network, a unit of Alberta Health Services, the province's public health care agency. Major areas of work currently are: - Bone fracture: implementing an evidence-based care path for hip fracture; designing and implementing an evidence-based post-acute care path for bone fracture; and developing and implementing bone fracture prevention programs. - Hip and knee replacement: working with health care professionals, administrators, researchers, patients and others to improve service delivery and patient outcomes. Reducing wait times is a major part of this work. - Continuous improvement reporting: analyzing data and producing comprehensive reports showing performance against benchmarks in hip and knee replacement. - Inflammatory arthritis: working with rheumatologists and other clinicians as well as health care administrators to develop a model of integrated care, with special focus on fast access to treatment.
