University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is one of the UK's biggest and busiest hospitals, particularly recognised for high-quality research in Cardiovascular (Heart Disease), Respiratory (Lung Disease) and Diabetes. Together with the University of Leicester and Loughborough University, UHL our Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is focused on these very important disease areas. We also have a cross-cutting ‘Precision Medicine' theme which uses genetics and other blood markers to help us to tailor our discoveries and treatments to individuals, creating more effective treatments and reducing their side-effects. Our BRC brings together 70 highly skilled researchers, 30 of these are at the forefront of clinical services delivery. We believe that scientists working closely with clinicians will allow us to deliver research that is relevant to our patients and the professionals who treat them. We have invested in state-of-the-art infrastructure including buildings and research laboratories across our Hospitals, and in Loughborough University, as part of the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine which is part of the 2012 Olympic Legacy. Our research mission is to understand how genes and other blood markers affect common problems such as Coronary Artery Disease, high blood pressure and breathing problems like Asthma. We also wish to discover new tests, drugs, devices and procedures. We make the most of public money by working with NHS Partners and the local community and will do our utmost to train and develop research staff, developing the next generation of world-class researchers.
