Founded in San Francisco in 1969, Oceanic Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of marine life in ecologically important areas across the globe. Over the past four decades we have developed a unique and effective approach that combines science, community engagement, and experience-driven outreach to create lasting change in the places we work. Our strengths are engaging people in conservation through experience, contributing to the establishment of marine reserves, and supporting community-based conservation initiatives. Oceans are the Earth's most important natural asset. They cover 70% of Earth's surface, contain 97% of all water, and provide 99% of Earth's habitable space. They are home to millions of species of plants and animals, including amazing species such as sea turtles, whales, dolphins, seabirds, sharks, corals, and so much more. They also provide more than half of our oxygen, supply the primary protein source for more than 1 billion people, provide millions of jobs, and regulate our climate. Yet the oceans need our help. Almost 80% of fish stocks are fully- to over-exploited, depleted, or in a state of collapse. Plastic pollution has created vast 'garbage patches' throughout the world's oceans. Hundreds of species are threatened with extinction. And only 2% of the oceans are under protection. But it's not too late to make a difference. The future is ours to create. We're committed to a better future for the oceans. Will you join us?
