CAP was established in 1975 by a group of physicians concerned about the spiraling cost of California medical malpractice coverage and who were galvanized to do something about it. The result was a unique medical malpractice liability cooperative whose core product – the Mutual Protection Trust (MPT) – today provides medical professional liability protection to more than 12,000 of California's finest physicians. Since 2006, MPT has earned an "A+" (superior) rating from A.M. Best, the world's largest organization rating the financial strength of companies in our industry. In 2013, CAP organized CAPAssurance, a Risk Purchasing Group, to bring liability insurance coverage to member hospitals, health care facilities, and large medical groups.
