23ABC News is a station dedicated to developing next generation talent. KERO manages this process through a Journalism Career Program partnership with Arizona State University. Program participants begin their careers at KERO under the mentorship of the director of new media and news director. Following completion of the one-year program, participants are well prepared to compete for future roles in larger markets in the parent company, E.W. Scripps. Located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, Bakersfield sits on the southern end of the Central Valley within Kern County. The city is 110 miles north of Los Angeles and 135 miles from Pismo Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Weekend trips to surrounding mountains, beaches, California's Bay Area, and Las Vegas offer locals time to relax in their off hours. Bakersfield enjoys more clear days than the majority of the U.S. (averaging 191 days a year). Bakersfield enjoys long-lasting, mild autumns and warm springs Major industries are agriculture and energy. Kern County is the most oil productive county in America, with around 10 percent of the nation's domestic production. It also ranks in the top five most productive agricultural counties in the nation. Products manufactured in the city include: ice cream (world's largest ice cream plant), central vacuums, highway paint and stock racing cars. The Bakersfield Condors are an AHL franchise hockey team and the Bakerfield JAM are the local basketball team. Bakersfield provides a wide variety of arts and culture. Music is performed in a variety of locations throughout the city. The Buck Owens Crystal Palace, which symbolizes Bakersfield's country western music heritage is a local gem.
