The SLSMC and its partners … an essential and responsive transportation system connecting the heartland of North America to the world. At the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, you're in the heart of the action! The Great Lakes/Seaway System is a "marine highway" that extends some 3,700 km from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. Ranked as one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century, the Seaway includes 13 Canadian locks and 2 U.S. locks connecting the lower St. Lawrence River to the Great Lakes. Together with our American counterpart, the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, we coordinate on a host of operational activities, ranging from traffic management to navigation aids and every other conceivable issue you might imagine would be important for a major waterway. The gateway to … and from the heartland of North America! The scope of our operations is enormous, both on a commercial and human level. Approximately 160 million tonnes of cargo travels over the combined Great Lakes/Seaway System on an annual basis, supporting over 227,000 jobs and $35 billion in economic activity. The Seaway's capacity to cost-effectively move tens of millions of tonnes of cargo, coupled with its outstanding reliability, makes the waterway an indispensable part of the North American logistics network. Infrastructure - Investing in our Future The SLSMC is investing $395 million in asset renewal over the course of five years (concluding in 2018). Modernizing Seaway Operations In 2015, The SLSMC received a prestigious award from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development for developing the world's first Hands-Free Mooring system for ships transiting its locks. With a seaway system as vast and complex as ours, it takes professionals from many specializations to ensure that the passing of ships and their cargo are handled with efficiency and professionalism.
