WPTS opperates at 92.1 MHz with an ERP of 17 watts, and is licensed to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Its transmitter is located on the top of the university's Cathedral of Learning in Pittsburgh. WPTS-FM originally evolved from WPGH, an AM carrier current station that broadcast to the Pitt Student Union and dormitories. WPGH was started in the fall of 1957 by 12 students, including Adrian Cronauer, whose experiences in Vietnam were made famous by Robin Williams in the movie Good Morning Vietnam. In 2009, WPTS was nominated as one of the five finalists for the mtvU Woodie Award for best college radio station in the United States. The day-to-day programming and opperations of the station are overseen and managed by the Station Manager and the 11-person Board of Directors. the Board is hired by the Station Manager, who is overseen by the General Manager, a fulltime staff member of the University department of Student Affairs. The Directors manage specific departments and staffs, and include Music, Promotions, Programming, News, Sports, among others. The Station Manager is selected by the WPTS Advisory Board, which is composed of allumni, student representatives, and Pittsburgh radio professionals.
