Since 1908, the Public Service Commission (PSC) has been dedicated to building a Public Service that strives for excellence. The PSC works closely with other government departments and is accountable to and reports independently to Parliament. The PSC is mandated to appoint, or provide for the appointment of, persons to or from within the public service. It provides staffing and assessment functions and services to support staffing in the public service. The PSC also oversees the integrity of the staffing system and ensures non-partisanship. This oversight role includes maintaining and interpreting data on the public service; carrying out audits; and conducting investigations that can lead to corrective action in the case of errors or problems. Finally, the PSC administers provisions of the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA) related to the political activities of employees and deputy heads. The PSC headquarters is located in a modern new building at 22 Eddy Street in Gatineau, Quebec, and its regional offices are located in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
