Augusta, Georgia is a consolidated government with 2,400 employees, representing approximately 200,000 citizens. Augusta is situated on the west bank of the Savannah River, 150 miles northwest of Savannah and 150 miles east of Atlanta. Augusta is home to the prestigious Masters golf tournament, the US Army's Fort Gordon, and Georgia Regents University. A vibrant technology sector is helping to grow Augusta beyond the traditional manufacturing economic base for the community. Although the 'old' City of Augusta and Richmond County consolidated in 1996 to form the current government, Augusta was originally founded in 1736 and has served as an economic, recreational, industrial, transportation, and military center for over 200 years.
