Walk through a redwood forest—home of the tallest, largest and some of the oldest living beings on Earth—and you can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of awe and peace among these magnificent giants. Since 1918, Save the Redwoods League has led the effort to protect the coast redwoods and giant sequoias for all to experience and enjoy. After only 150 years of logging and development, approximately 5 percent of the original 2 million acre coast redwood forest remains today. And although they have survived for millennia, these gentle giants can still be easily cut down for lumber or to make room for poorly planned development. Climate change and underfunded state and national park systems also threaten the future of these great trees. Guided by our science-based Master Plans to save redwoods throughout their natural ranges, the League purchases priority pieces of land and donates or sells the property to government agencies for protection as parks and reserves. We restore logged forests to their majestic state by, among other measures, removing roads and restoring wildlife habitat. Our protection and restoration work is guided by an active science program that is advancing our understanding of what redwoods need to survive. We also educate current and future stewards to save redwoods by helping people to better understand, appreciate and connect with the wonder of the redwoods. Be we can't do this work alone—help us continue to protect the redwoods and join us today!
