Founded by Rev. Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani over 50 years ago and under the leadership of Executive Director Rita Shimmin, GLIDE offers comprehensive support services to San Francisco's poor, homeless and working-poor communities to overcome the barriers of poverty, violence, substance use disorders, dependency and low self-worth. GLIDE respects the dignity of every individual, regardless of circumstance. Everyone is always welcome at GLIDE, wherever they are at in life, with unconditional love and support to help them stabilize their lives, meet basic needs, find community, recovery, health and opportunity. GLIDE wants to see everyone thrive in their potential as human beings and an invaluable part of our social world. GLIDE's social services were launched in the 1960s when GLIDE congregants organized a Monday night potluck to serve hungry people in the community. Since then, GLIDE has become one of San Francisco's largest and most comprehensive providers of innovative programs and services for the poor and marginalized. www.glide.org
