The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is a global communion of Christian churches in the Lutheran tradition. Founded in 1947 in Lund, Sweden, the LWF now has 145 member churches in 98 countries all over the world representing over 72 million Christians. The LWF acts on behalf of its member churches in areas of common interest such as ecumenical and interfaith relations, theology, humanitarian assistance, human rights, communication, and the various aspects of mission and development work. The Department for World Service (DWS) is the relief and development arm of the LWF. DWS works in 35 countries through three regional, 19 country and eight associate programs and emergency operations. All DWS country programs began at the invitation of local partners in response to emergencies. Where possible, DWS transfers governance to these partners in the form of DWS associate programs.
