Light is an American digital photography company that aims to make beautiful photography more accessible to all consumers. The company was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The unique backgrounds of founders Dave Grannan and Rajiv Laroia working in mobile technology inspired their partnership to create Light. Grannan and Laroia also recognized a need for better-quality cameras in smartphones. Together they strive to change the way consumers think about photography: "quality must come at high cost, a big size and with a steep learning curve." Light introduced the revolutionary L16 camera in October 2015. As the first multi-aperture computational camera, the L16 produces DSLR-quality images but without the bulky weight and inconvenience of traditional camera equipment. The camera is built around computational photography that constructs photos from data, rather than capturing exactly how light falls on an image. With a computational photography approach, the L16 addresses two common problems of digital photography: image noise and low light. The 16 individual cameras that exist within the device is the major feature that differentiates the product from today's average smartphone. Ten of these individual cameras take the photo simultaneously, offering slightly different perspectives. The software merges these images into one high-resolution, 52-megapixel image. Combining advanced optics with powerful software, users have the ability to shoot, edit and share their high-quality photos all within the device. Within its first two years of operating, the company raised millions through funding and has worked with major manufacturing partners. Light has continued to push the boundaries of camera technology.
