The Petroleum Technology Research Centre is a world leader in the development of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon dioxide storage demonstration projects. Our important field trials have included: the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project; the Joint Implementation of Vapour Extraction (JIVE) Project that looked at three separate oil field applications of solvent vapour extraction technologies; and the Aquistore CO2 Storage Project associated with SaskPower's Boundary Dam Carbon Capture Facility in southeastern Saskatchewan. PTRC works by leveraging government with private sectors funds, collaborating with different oil companies to identify the areas of research and field trials that will have the most impact on production. PTRC's R&D and field trials move the needle on recovery from Western Canada's sometimes difficult-to-access oil, improving efficiency, reducing environmental effects, and maximizing returns from existing infrastructure. PTRC's goal is to achieve 5 billion barrels of additional oil reserves from Saskatchewan and Western Canada's oil-in-place over the next five years, through the application of new EOR technologies at the field demonstration level. PTRC's impacts have already been felt. The JIVE field trials included Husky Oil, providing data that informed Husky's CO2-EOR heavy oil recovery project at its Lashburn field, and Husky is expanding these solvent recovery methods at its Pike's Peak field in the coming year. The world's carbon capture and storage industry, along with several CO2-enhanced oil recovery operations, have benefitted from the technical results at Weyburn and Aquistore, including the publication of 'Best Practices for Validating CO2 Geological Storage: Observations and Guidance from the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale Project'.
