Bristol Charities came into being as a result of the 1835 Municipal Corporations Act and the Trustees administer those charities that, prior the Act, were under the control of the Corporation of Bristol. Subsequently, many other charities have been brought within the administration of Bristol Charities and that process continues today. The oldest charity was founded in 1395, and the most recent was formed in 2003, six hundred and eight years of charitable activity within the city. Today, Bristol Charities focuses on three core areas: â€¢Providing excellent quality almshouse accommodation with support on site in a safe community setting. â€¢Providing Day Care and Daytime opportunities through our day centres and our soon-to-be-opened Centre for Dementia in Brentry, Bristol. â€¢Giving to those in need through individual grants, and grants to other community organisations, and through providing mobility aids and adaptations to vulnerable people.
