Denise Grosdanof always had problems tolerating regular, store-bought soaps. The chemicals seemed to irritate her skin. One day, after being laid off from a job in advertising, she decided to try making her own soap. Not only would it save money, but it would allow her to know exactly what ingredients were going into the products. She read a few books and started experimenting with natural ingredients like honey and oatmeal, and began making small batches to use and sell to her friends. Gradually, through word of mouth and by selling at farmers' markets, her business grew. She began selling her soaps to a large Canadian company, and to keep up with the large orders, she decided to rent a small storefront in Scarborough and the Sweet Pea Soap boutique was born. "It's allowed us to get really creative with our products, having more space in our workshop now. It's given us more freedom to experiment," explains Denise. And creativity is just what you see when you look at some of the home-made items at the Sweet Pea Soap Company. Beautiful and colourful cupcake bath bombs sit on terraced cupcake stands, and chocolate chip cookie soaps nestle sweetly together on vintage serving trays. It's a girl's dream. "Those cookie soaps were just a way we came up with to use the ends of the bars of soap!" she laughs. "Some of our best sellers came from making lemonade out of lemons." She is constantly listening to her customers' feedback and requests, and adding new products based on their needs and suggestions. That's how she began selling her Skin Relief Serum and Facial Mask, both of which are now big sellers. And it's this sense of community that Denise looks forward to building. It hasn't been easy, trying to spread the word about her shop, but when she sees repeat customers, or hears that they have chosen to shop at the Sweet Pea Soap Company for their gifts, instead of at the local mall, she feels that she has achieved success. And it's certainly easy to see why.
