A modern University with deep roots. Adelphi University has a rich history, an exciting present and a limitless and exciting future. Founded in 1896, Adelphi University was Long Island's first private coeducational institution of higher learning. Since 2007, Adelphi has been cited as a Best Buy by the Fiske Guide to Colleges, one of only a handful of private universities to make the list annually. As Adelphi has grown, our academic programs have evolved to reflect the needs and interests of our nearly 8,000 students—which hail from from 40 states and 45 countries—to include an acclaimed Honors College; and programs in the arts, sciences, social work, nursing, public health, business, psychology and education. Adelphi's main 75-acre campus in historic Garden City is conveniently located 23 miles away from Manhattan—the social, cultural and financial center of the world— and just a few miles from some of Long Island's sandy beaches, expansive parks and cultural centers. Specialized extracurricular and academic programs promote student involvement in civic and community service. Adelphi students also take advantage of numerous internship and experiential learning opportunities on Long Island and in New York City. Adelphi has outstanding NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic teams, including its national champion women's lacrosse team. In Fall 2008, Adelphi opened the state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center and Center for Recreation and Sports, both serving as a hub for student activities, cultural performances, athletic competitions and academics. Through our schools—the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Nursing and Public Health, Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Honors College, Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, School of Social Work and University College—Adelphi offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs at our main Garden City campus and at off-campus centers in Manhattan, Suffolk County and Hudson Valley.
