Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Ashburton is a registered charity, affiliated to Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW). The charity provide a resource and expertise to the Police and emergency services on Dartmoor, across Devon, and sometimes further afield across the southwest of England. The charity is 100% staffed by volunteers who are on call 24/7, 365 days a year, providing a frequently life saving service to assist the Police and ambulance service with the search and rescue of the lost, missing and injured. Our volunteers join as trainees and undertake an assessed indepth training program covering all areas of search and rescue including advanced first aid, search techniques, navigation, helicopter procedures, swift water rescue, radio communications and rope rescue. Once complete, which typically takes between 12 - 18 months, our volunteers become full members and are placed on the callout list. The training doesn't stop there as full members are expected to attend training weekly evenings in all weathers throughout the year. Other activities undertaken by our volunteers include fundraising and support at various public events in the area including the Ten Tors Expedition and the Dartmoor Classic Cycle Sportive. The team is almost entirely dependant on public donation and fundraising by its volunteers to fund the approximate Â£15,000 annual operating costs that includes keeping its incident control vehicle and Landrover ambulance maintained, and the replacement and maintenance of its specialised rescue and first aid equipment. Apart from its land based rescue operations, the charity also has a swift water rescue capability with a specialist team trained as Rescue 3 Swiftwater Rescue Technicians, and all the remaining callout volunteers trained to the Rescue 2 standard. Currently there are approximately 60 team members on the callout list.
