Wavemaker is a digital learning and making space in the heart of Stoke-on-Trent. We enable, inspire and educate learners through classes, workshops and roadshows working with professionals, young people and hard-to-reach groups alike. As a three year project funded by Nominet and Comic Relief we have non profit aims and look to remove barriers to creativity by providing access to equipment, software and expertise as well as the opportunity to work in an upbeat, inspirational environment. With access to a pool of partners who have expertise in a wide range of disciplines including coding, illustration, photography, digital design and making with 3D printers we are able to tailor projects to the needs of users of the space as well as custom-design workshops. In addition we have a flexible work space where freelance workers can hot desk and make use of office equipment and high speed internet in a central location only minutes from the station. We have several specific areas of focus including: -The gap in digital skills in local young people, especially those in hard to reach groups -The lack of city-wide availability of maker spaces specialising in digital skill development -The lack of opportunities for professionals and learners/makers to share spaces and ideas in an IP protected environment We have received glowing feedback from users of our after-school code club, and are the delivery partner of choice of the City Council for their Science and Tech delivery engagement programmes.
