Her Justice stands with women living in poverty in New York City by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help, and by addressing individual and systemic legal barriers. Every day, thousands of women throughout New York City fear going to work because they don't have an order of protection to prevent their abusive partners from stalking them. They worry about how to feed and clothe their children without the child support they deserve. Undocumented mothers are terrified that they will be deported and never see their children again because their batterers prevent them from gaining legal residency. With barely enough money for life's basic necessities, hiring an attorney is not an option. Women facing violence at home or threats to their children's lives have immediate, urgent legal needs, and they deserve competent representation regardless of their ability to pay. Her Justice is one of the few places in New York City where women can turn to find free matrimonial, family and immigration legal services. We recruit our volunteer attorneys from major law firms and small borough-based practices. With the support of Her Justice's expert legal staff, they go into court and fight for things that matter: protection from abuse, financial support, and orders granting child custody and divorce that replace fear with hope.
