On April 17, 2009 the University of Alabama Board of Trustees unanimously voted to establish the Center for Advanced Public Safety. CRDL became CAPS at that time. Housed in Shelby Hall on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, CAPS is affiliated with the Computer Science Department in the UA College of Engineering.
