Philadelphia Theatre Company (PTC) is a leading regional theater company that produces, develops, and presents entertaining and imaginative contemporary theater focused on the American experience. PTC balances its Philadelphia roots with a national point of view that combines a taste for adventure with a dedication to new American plays and musicals. In 2007, PTC was instrumental in expanding Philadelphia's thriving cultural corridor by opening the Suzanne Roberts Theatre on the Avenue of the Arts. Philadelphia Theatre Company has long held the contemporary American playwright at the core of its mission. Founded in 1974 as The Philadelphia Company by Robert Hedley and Jean Harrison, Philadelphia Theatre Company was the first of our city's ambitious young performing arts companies to produce bold new work, while inviting audiences to participate in the development process. Under the direction of Sara Garonzik from 1982-2017, and now Producing Artistic Director Paige Price, the company has introduced more than 140 new plays and musicals to Philadelphia, New York, and around the country, establishing the Company's national reputation for artistic quality, risk-taking and diverse programming. World premieres produced include Terrence McNally's Golden Age, Unusual Acts of Devotion, Some Men, and three-time Tony Award-winner Master Class; Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins by Margaret Engel and Allison Engel, starring Kathleen Turner; the PTC-commissioned The Happiness Lecture, conceived by and starring Bill Irwin; Being Alive with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and directed by Billy Porter; Adrift in Macao by Christopher Durang and Peter Melnick; Bruce Graham's According to Goldman; John Henry Redwood's No Niggers, No Jews...; J.T. Rogers' White People; Bunny Bunny by Alan Zweibel; and the American premiere of Birdy by Naomi Wallace. Philadelphia Theatre Company has received 180 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre nominations and 53 awards.
